MAINSITE Contemporary Art is pleased to exhibit the nationally acclaimed work of Dorothy Norris Moses, beginning September 21st and exhibiting through November 25th, 2007. Dorothy Norris Moses works primarily with acrylics, sometimes incorporating collaged paper and other 3 dimensional elements, to create her unpredictable and imaginative imagery. Moses says of her work:"My work is a blending of the intellect and the intuitive, working to bring in new dimensions of experimentation, sometimes with color and sometimes with texture and sometimes with both forms." One reviewer said of her work:"Moses strives to convey essential truths beneath the surface of their subjects. This leads her to use wild and outlandish colors and distorted figures to present a perspective, the truth of which transcends reality." Moses has exhibited her work extensively, statewide, as well as the throughout the southwest and east coast. This is Moses's first full gallery exhibition at MAINSITE.
Artist statement by Dorothy Norris Moses:
'My art is representational, a blending of the intuitive and the intellect. My paintings have many layers sometimes done only with paint and other times with paint paper and other materials. A painting begins with layering one color on top of another, and wiping, so that the last color comes through. When I feel the background has it's own life, I introduce the focal point. This may be people, flowers, fruit or whatever. The people I paint represent parts of myself, or people I have known. It never looks like the person. It is just a part of their character as I see it.'
MAINSITE Contemporary Art is pleased to exhibit the new work of Ruth Borum, beginning September 21st and exhibiting though November 25th, 2007.
Ruth Borum works primarily with oil paints, to create what she describes as her 'cabinet of curiosities', that include imagery of women, abstractions, and cupcakes.
Borum creates mostly small paintings that juxtapose almost sweet, pastel colors, with imagery of ladies faces with distorted features, and cupcakes topped with cherries or skulls. This is Borum's first full gallery exhibition at MAINSITE.
Artist Statement by Ruth Borum:
'Obsession, repetition, pattern, growth. Through painting, I use these underlying themes to build a cabinet of curiosities, each figure, carrying similar features, that I could bring to life in no other way. In repeating them, I find that a dialog of subtleties begins, each difference plays off and into the other.
I employ painting as entertainment, challenge and exercise (and income). Painting is a tool to communicate things that thrill me, as well as a way to accept and build tolerance for things that seem alien.
Sometimes the direct sources of my subject are as private and obscured as those in dreams. Others play off my continued interest in the beautiful grotesque, as well as celebratory symbols, notably sugar in its dual nature as enemy/friend. Sugar if over consumed becomes a kind of poison, yet we honor each other with sweets, light them on fire, gather around them, and feed them in sacred matrimonial rituals. The cake is a kind of altar, and centerpiece, eating it a kind of communion. The cupcake, a smaller form of cake, becomes a portable shrine.
Freakishly beautiful these women with their long necks, double eyes, and medusa-like headdresses, coiling out of control, are women of untouchable power. I believe that there are places in this world where the people are too beautiful to even come out of their houses. If such a place is ever found, I think these delightful creatures would definitely be there.'
