Carrie Fudickar
Artist Statement, Fiberglass Frontier
Fiberglass Frontier explores the phenomena of simulated history within American theme parks. Simulation has become a popular entertainment venue as well as an accepted exhibition tool for museums and historical sites. The existence of themed restaurants, shopping centers, and housing developments is now so commonplace it has become easy to overlook. The theme park is the most exaggerated of these spaces. It deliberately obscures itself from the outside world, discouraging comparison to reality. Further, it promotes its own legitimacy by fusing real histories into its artificial environment. The myth town of the American theme park is set perpetually in the late 19th century, intrinsically linked to the Gilded Age’s exuberant optimism, expansion, and industrial growth. This project documents seven major theme parks, cataloguing how history, myth, and entertainment coexist within the gates of the fiberglass frontier.

Shane Brown
Artist Statement, Boundary
From the time I began sixth grade through graduating high school, I crossed over the line that separates Tulsa County, where I lived, into Osage County, where I attended Skiatook Public Schools. I would not become aware, until many years later when I began my academic and photographic pursuits, that I had also been crossing over from Cherokee Territory into The Osage Nation Reservation. During the many years of my personal and photographic explorations of the state of Oklahoma, I have discovered that it is a state of nations and territories. The place in whole is comprised of sections that have been piecemealed and rearranged for centuries. Oklahoma is a place that is as geographically diverse as it is geologically varied.
Boundary is a continuation of an ever-expanding photographic record of the people and the natural and cultural landscape of Oklahoma. This particular body of work, rather than being expository as with other photographic groups within the larger framework that I have created, is at first unexplained—seemingly simple pairings of anonymous landscapes. The requirement that the viewer engage in exploration of the location of the scene to gain explanation ensures that the observer will discover that they are indeed viewing both sides of one of the many boundaries that exist within Oklahoma. These borders may exist between historical territories, such as “No Man’s Land” (present day Beaver County and the easternmost county in the Oklahoma Panhandle), and the Cherokee Outlet (a swath of land stretching across northern Oklahoma, comprised of many counties and Indian Territories and is also a territory that once belonged to the Cherokee Nation and is often confused with the Cherokee Strip, which is actually a two-mile wide strip of land in Kansas running the length of the historical Cherokee Outlet along the Oklahoma/Kansas border), or the photographs may present territorial boundaries, such as that existing between the Apache/Comanche/Kiowa Territory and the Cheyenne-Arapahoe Territory in western Oklahoma. Boundary serves as a “chapter” within the larger context of my photographic efforts within Oklahoma. The informative nature of this group of photographs is commensurate with the larger archive of my Oklahoma work in that it provokes the viewer to consider the cultural, economic, social, emotional, and political circumstances that exist in this state and that these conditions know no boundary, rather, they exist in centers, and often overlap. The project exposes boundaries as place, and the photographs compel one to consider the nature of that place and the role it plays in establishing, maintaining, and changing the cultural landscape of Oklahoma.
Shane Brown, Artist Biography
Shane Brown is an Oklahoman and award-winning photographer working in documentary, fine art, editorial and commercial photography. He is currently earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of Oklahoma, which he will complete in May 2008. He received his B.A. in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on creative writing and sociology from Oklahoma State University (2005) and an Associates in Applied Science of Photography Technology from Oklahoma State University-Okmulgee (2001) where he was awarded the outstanding photography graduate award.
A regular contributing photographer and contributing editor to Oklahoma Today Magazine, Shane has received the Society for Professional Journalists Gold award for Magazine Photography and the International Regional Magazine Association Inc.’s Silver Award for Feature Photography. His photographs are also included in many private, corporate, and museum collections including: The Oklahoma State Art Collection (Oklahoma City, OK), The Great Plains Art Museum (Lincoln, NE), BJ Oil Services (Houston, TX), Kirkpatrick Oil (Oklahoma City, OK), as well as The Cherokee Nation (Catoosa, OK). He has received grants from the Oklahoma Visual Artists’ Coalition and the Lew Wentz Foundation. Recently, Shane has begun working in the arena of documentary film, shooting stills for The Flaming Lips: U.F.O.s at the Zoo, Okie Noodling 2 (in post-production), and worked as associate producer on an upcoming documentary about the Oklahoma State Prison Rodeo.
Shane’s primary focus is meaningful documentation of the people, places, and cultural events in his home state. Exploring the convoluted history of Oklahoma by revealing its manifestations in the present, the photographs from his long-term Oklahoma-based projects reveal the photographer’s vision of what the state is really about. Regularly utilizing sly wit, Shane has a contemplative and insightful eye for capturing moments from the theater of the absurd that exist in Oklahoma. He realizes that the extraordinary is not confined to Oklahoma alone, but appreciates recognizing the “Other” in the place where he grew up. Wherever he might find himself, Shane is always at work creating photographic records of life—whether through formal studies, evocative records of beauty, enlightening expositions, or plain strange scenes—Shane prefers to combine these elements within a body of work.

Zero Consciousness is my response to the hyper-sensationalized images of pop culture, which are juxtaposed with social and political issues in contemporary American media. These media sources create a disarray of images from pop culture, social and political issues inadvertently creating a fractured collage of images and stories for their viewers to digest. Images that I am using in this work are those that have recently been portrayed on American media sources within the last few years; world issues that directly and indirectly affect the United States, the world of Hollywood stars, body image, and the most recent commodity that everyone must not live without.
My reason for using still-imagery is to represent the deluge of information fed to the viewer by mass media outlets. Along with still-imagery, I am incorporating dirt, clay slip and cold wax to obtain a surface that creates a layered effect. This texture is a metaphor for the dilapidation of the mental process that the viewer experiences while seeking to absorb the bombardment of images.
