MAINSITE Contemporary Art~ Spring Art Walk Exhibition

MAINSITE will be participating in the Norman Gallery Association Art
Walk, Spring 2006, by opening an exhibition of work by artists Jen Taylor
and George Hughes.

The works of George Hughes are mostly executed in mixed media:
acrylics, oils, spray paint, polyurethane enamels, fabric paint,

photographs, blueprints, and manuscripts on supports such as canvas,
wood, and found objects.
When asked about his work, Hughes replied "My works are a diary of
introspection and a residue of self-analysis. They are also an
investigation into awareness in relation to the unknown, the familiar,
and the essence of being. They are layered with multiple cultural and
poetic undertones that defy singular interpretation. Plural themes and
the ambiguous use of pictorial space evident in these works reveal the
contradictions of reality."
George Hughes is a painting professor at the University of Oklahoma.

Jen Taylor's new work entitled Just Sweeping are made with simple
domestic objects such as brooms, hand brooms, dustpans, and flour
sifters.
The medium is very finely sifted particles of chalk, graphite and
Oklahoma red dirt.
When asked about her work Taylor replied, "This current installation
of "Drawings" evolved from setting up new exploratory parameters for
myself as an artist such as: What if I deprive myself of the medium I
feel so comfortable with? What everyday objects and movements can I
use to create drawings? What sort of traces and tracks will be left
behind by these tools and body movements? The drawings that evolved
from these questions, like my many layered paintings are multi-layered
in meaning. They are a record of my body performing a simple
meditative repetitive action and moving through a specific place &
time."
Jen Taylor is a native Oklahoman, currently gaining her masters degree
from Kansas University.
